More Doo Dee Doo

More Doo Dee Doo...

Remember that song from a few years back...”I Knew I Loved You” by Savage Garden? (Out of curiosity, I just looked it up...1999. Time does fly, when you’re having fun...or not.)

Anyway, that song contains the line “I Think I Dreamed You Into Life”. Well...Julie Newell was not one to be so wishy washy. Julie KNEW she dreamed me into life!

I think I referenced this story at her retirement in May 2006...stating that I had reacted with little enthusiasm (and ample skepticism) when she first told it to me looooong before 1999, saying something profound like “Uh...sure...that’s nice.” (Is it genetic? How men can place both feet firmly into their mouths with such great ease?)

According to Julie, long before she knocked on “my door” in September 1969, she HAD dreamed...that someday she would fall in love and marry. Well...that’s not exactly unique among the female species. But the details of her “dream man” are...in “20-20 hindsight”...somewhat startling. Seems that her future husband would be a teacher...would wear glasses...and would be white! Uh, last time I checked, that makes me a “Perfect 3"! (Of course, I pale...don’t groan, Julie; let me have my “punnies”. Let’s rephrase that...of course, my score pales next to Julie’s “Perfect 10".)

Still, I was VERY skeptical...figuring that she probably got the time line wrong...that maybe, just maybe, she had these dreams AFTER we met...because she didn’t tell me this story until a few years AFTER we were married.

Well...Julie was not to be denied! She marched off...no, now that I think of it, she grabbed me by the ear (okay, I exaggerate) and we drove over to her parent's house where her sisters resided...the few times that they weren’t actually in our house! Without “prepping” them, Julie asked them to tell me about the man she was destined to marry. Down to every detail, the story was repeated. Still devoutly skeptical, I inquired as to WHEN she had told them this “story”, and without hesitation, came the response...back when she was in high school!

(Hmmm...just occurred to me...anybody got the Cairo High School yearbooks from 1965 to 1968? Wonder if there were any white male teachers wearing glasses back then? Wonder if she had a school-girl crush on one of them...and I got her on the rebound?! No...say it isn’t so, Julie! Sure would mess up this story!)

Okay, where were we before we were so rudely interrupted?

Oh, yeah, Julie’s witnesses testifying as to her premonitions. Well...hush my mouth (after removing feet). Just to be me, I continued to call her story into question whenever it came up...especially when the aforementioned song was released and she turned to me and said “Ronnie...somebody finally got around to writing MY song!”

I pointed out...for the umpteenth time that what she proposed was impossible. How could SHE dream me into life when - as she reminded me every year on August 12th - I was SIX YEARS OLDER (for 5 days) than she. Doesn’t the dreamer have to precede the dreamee?

Julie was NEVER dissuaded by logic...had no role to play in her world. Sometimes, she would engage in discourse to refute my logic...something along the lines that I just thought that I was “alive” before she met me. Now...THAT argument did't last very long, because I wouldn’t/couldn’t argue with that “logic”...IT WAS FACT! But...most of the time she kept it simple, saying something along the lines of “I’m right; you’re wrong!” Come to think of it, I didn’t argue with that statement either. Again, I had learned early on the validity of the cliche “discretion is the better part of valor!”

Yes, Julie...you win the argument! I might have been alive before I met you, but I had never truly lived!

Thank God your dream came true...

Below are the lyrics to “I Knew I Loved You” by Savage Garden

Maybe it's intuition
but some things you just don't question
Like in your eyes, I see my future in an instant
And there it goes,
I think I found my best friend
I know that it might sound
more than a little crazy
but I believe...

I knew I loved you before I met you
I think I dreamed you into life
I knew I loved you before I met you
I have been waiting all my life

There's just no rhyme or reason
Only the sense of completion
And in your eyes, I see
the missing pieces I'm searching for
I think I've found my way home
I know that it might sound
more than a little crazy
but I believe...

I knew I loved you before I met you
I think I dreamed you into life
I knew I loved you before I met you
I have been waiting all my life

A thousand angels dance around you
I am complete now that I've found you

I knew I loved you before I met you
I think I dreamed you into life
I knew I loved you before I met you
I have been waiting all my life

I knew I loved you before I met you
I think I dreamed you into life
I knew I loved you before I met you
I have been waiting all my life
