An Obama Fan

Julie knew Barack Obama back when...

And...she was NOT impressed!

Barack Obama paid a visit to a meeting of the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund's Board of Trustees back when he was a member of the Illinois Senate. After the meeting, Julie had an opportunity to "meet and greet" the Senator. ("Ronnie" watched from "the gallery"...being a mere chauffeur for Miss Julie!)

Afterward, Julie told me that "he's got a ways to go", commenting negatively on the Senator's "people skills". Seems that the Senator did not hold "eye contact", which was very high on Julie's list of required traits for a successful politician.

Incidentally, whenever possible, I like to provide documentation for the substance of my postings. (This is more for my benefit that yours...wanting to make sure that the event related is not some faulty recollection.) I thought that I remembered Julie meeting Senator Obama and her assessment, but I wanted to make sure that I wasn't getting him confused with another politician. Therefore, I Googled "Obama IMRF" and voilą...

(Second item in the "Highlights"; Julie listed bottom left.)

So, when the Presidential Election Campaign began...TWO YEARS AGO...Julie was not sold on Barack Obama. Since Julie HAD been a Clinton fan...for years, her early favorite was Hillary. For that reason, when the Illinois Primary was held, Ronnie cast his vote for Hillary...as an "absentee ballot" for Julie.

Knowing Julie as well as I do, I know that she would have been greatly impressed by Barack Obama's growth over the past months. It was interesting to listen to the pundits over the past week crediting Obama's long primary battle with Hillary as "making" him a much better, stronger candidate. Julie would have concurred.

Therefore, when I cast my ballot at Emerson Elementary yesterday morning, I knew that "Julie Newell approved this message". (Have to admit it crossed my mind when I entered the polling place yesterday that IF things had been different, it would have been Julie sitting behind the table in her election judge roll, looking her Ronnie up in the book of voters...)

Okay, Ron...that was nice story...letting us know that (in your fertile mind) Julie had become "An Obama Fan". Thank you for sharing...

Dear, Reader...I am disappointed in you. Do you REALLY think that I would take up your valuable time with some speculative musings on Julie's political preferences a year after her passing? Ye of little faith...

Okay, I guess I DID take up your time. However, after all these many posts, after all of this practice, YOU should recognize "a digression" by now!

This post is NOT about whether Julie had become an Obama fan or not. (Well, there might be a connection, but I'll let you decide that...later.)

This post is about my FURNACE FAN...the one Julie "took out" on the one-year anniversary of my "cemetery experience"...the "sign" I overlooked during my futile search for butterflies and birds...and before "I saw the light!"

My furnace repairman was supposed to be at my house at 8 a.m. sharp on Monday morning to fix my broken furnace...the fan that would not turn off. He didn't show...didn't show Tuesday either...or so far today. I have been fortunate that the day-time temperatures have been spring-like. However, the 30s and 40s at night tend to put a nip in the (house) air.

After trying to cope with a space heater, I finally decided to take a chance (on burning down the house or further damaging the furnace.) I put the door back on the front of the furnace, turned the thermostat up, and waited to see what would happen.

Well, success! The burners did ignite and the cold air coming out of the vents turned warm, heating the house. When the temperature in the house reached the setting on the thermostat, the burners went out and the fan continued...blowing increasingly cold air. Hey, not a problem...went down and took the door off the furnace again. Solar energy then kicked in for the rest of the day...keeping the house around 70 degrees.

I did that each morning over the weekend and into the week.

This morning, I looked for local election returns to post on my union Web site, CAT Tracks. As I was typing and formatting, the chill started getting to me. I flipped on my space heater, but then thought...nah, let's do the furnace thing again. Went downstairs, put the door back on the furnace, went upstairs turned the thermostat up, and sat down to do my posting.

Finished the posting...

Figured, okay, probably time to take the front off of the furnace to stop the fan. Got up, walked to the thermostat to see if the temperature had reached the desired level.

And, THAT is when noticed something...SILENCE!

The furnace fan was NOT running. Immediately thought...DAMN, probably burnt the fan motor up!!!

Went downstairs to check the furnace. Yep, the fan was NOT running. However, I didn't see anything amiss...didn't smell anything amiss. Things that make you go "Hmmm..."

Decided to go back upstairs and turn the thermostat up...to see what would happen. Went back downstairs and waited...

Almost immediately, the burners ignited...flames...normal flames. As I was trying to decide what to do now...other than call the repairman...a sound...music to my ears.

The fan came on...blowing warmth throughout the house. And...shortly after the flames went out as the house reached the set temperature...the fan went off!

Ever the skeptic, I went upstairs and turned the thermostat up another couple of degrees, and, yes...the furnace worked again!

Okay, Dear Reader...I said that I would let YOU decide about this latest "doo dee doo dee doo dee doo dee" experience.

Was it...

Hey...don't look at me!

The decision is yours...

By the way...

Yesterday's "leaving the cemetery song"...may have been another one of those "forwarding messages".

Told you about Julie "using me" to reach Rachel the other day. Well, the song yesterday WAS message-like, but it just didn't seem to "speak to me" AND it didn't seem to fit Rachel either. So, after looking up the lyrics, I just "sat on it".

However, this morning...after my "FURNACE FAN II" experience...my thoughts returned to the song. Maybe the song reflects Julie's thoughts on last night's election...and the difficult road faced by that skinny black guy she met seven years ago, the guy that had "a ways to go."

Hey, Barack, maybe, just maybe, this song's for you...

Rascal Flatts Lyrics
"My Wish"

I hope that the days come easy and the moments pass slow,
And each road leads you where you want to go,
And if you're faced with a choice, and you have to choose,
I hope you choose the one that means the most to you.
And if one door opens to another door closed,
I hope you keep on walkin' till you find the window,
If it's cold outside, show the world the warmth of your smile,

But more than anything, more than anything,
My wish, for you, is that this life becomes all that you want it to,
Your dreams stay big, and your worries stay small,
You never need to carry more than you can hold,
And while you're out there getting where you're getting to,
I hope you know somebody loves you, and wants the same things too,
Yeah, this, is my wish.

I hope you never look back, but ya never forget,
All the ones who love you, in the place you left,
I hope you always forgive, and you never regret,
And you help somebody every chance you get,
Oh, you find God's grace, in every mistake,
And you always give more than you take.

But more than anything, yeah, and more than anything,
My wish, for you, is that this life becomes all that you want it to,
Your dreams stay big, and your worries stay small,
You never need to carry more than you can hold,
And while you're out there getting where you're getting to,
I hope you know somebody loves you, and wants the same things too,
Yeah, this, is my wish.

This is my wish
I hope you know somebody loves you
May all your dreams stay big

POSTSCRIPT: Rachel posted her thoughts earlier this morning about Julie and Barack and campaign '08. After my experience this morning, I'm thinking maybe she was right...

"I'm So Crazy" by Princess Rachella

I don't know why I was trippin' so hard about the election!

Remember last December 26th, when I wrote about opening the last box my sister Julie sent to me while I was in Northern Uganda? Well, on top of all the goodies she had somehow figured out I needed, nestled in the crumpled newspaper packaging, was a large "Obama '08" button, which I'm wearing today.

My brother in law Ron reminds me that at the time, Julie was a Hillary supporter. But I suspect that she also knew she wouldn't live to see the election, and that Obama just might be able to pull it out.

Julie wanted me to have this button to help celebrate for her. And that's what I did this morning, at the Tribe Hotel. I toasted President-elect Obama, hugged, wept and just marvelled at this moment in time.

I will probably be in a daze for a while. I just wish I hadn't worn mascara today, cause I'm definitely rockin' the whole 'coon eyes thing, which is NOT cool. Especially since everybody in the newsroom is coming over to congratulate me.

And this one reporter named Douglas, who introduced himself back in July by saying he hated Americans, now says those feelings have evaporated.

Now those are the kind of election results I'll stay up all night for!!!!!!
